Getting Ready to Go
For six to nine months prior to striking out on my own, I kept a legal pad and recorded my thoughts and ideas in preparation for independence. I am now in the process of organizing these ideas and prioritizing them. The list covers everything from creating an introductory client packet to a client review template. Usually ideas come over a period of time and it's important to keep track of them. How many times have you thought of something and said, "Why didn't I think of this sooner"? You might want to keep a log of your ideas, on what frustrates you at your current job and how you'd do it better, or at least differently, in both running your business and in serving clients. These streaks of creativity could prove valuable when you do go independent.
