Two-thirds of IRA-owning households were headed by boomers in 2008, according to the Investment Company Institute. Individual retirement accounts represent more than a quarter of U.S. total retirement market assets, compare with 15 percent 20 years ago. By June 2008, IRA assets were 10 percent of all household financial assets; in all, 70 percent of all U.S. households had some type of formal, tax-advantaged retirement savings.
