Federal agencies really don't want boomers to retire.
Said agencies are facing significant challenges before 2012, when one-third of the workforce will become eligible to retire. The Government Accountability Office is contemplating solutions to three apparent problems: The retiring workforce is leaving gaps in institutional knowledge and technical skills; Agencies have few midlevel staff to pass down knowledge and skills to less experienced workers; And agencies face difficulties in attracting enough well-qualified staff to replace retiring workers.
While the Office of Personnel Management says it already has approaches in place to improve recruiting and retain talented older workers, the GAO says, comprehensively, their strategies aren't getting out to enough agencies -- and time is running out.
