Retirement savings - Fun with numbers

13.5 million: Number of households headed by those aged 55 to 64 with retirement accounts of less than $100,000.

69 percent: All households within the 55 to 64 age group with retirement accounts of less than $100,000.

21 million: Number of nongovernment workers who participate in defined-benefit plans (such as a pension).

40 million: Number of nongovernment workers who participate in defined-contribution plans (such as a 401(k)).

50 percent: Amount of workers in the U.S. who participate in some kind of employer-sponsored plan.
