Home Prices and Sales, Earnings and GDP: Advisor Briefing for the Week of Oct. 25, 2010

Earnings season begins to wind down—though TD Ameritrade, Ameriprise, and some big insurers report this week—as the political season heats up prior to next week’s midterm elections. The final pre-election reports due to be released this week include weekly new unemployment claims on Thursday and the first look at third-quarter GDP on Friday, but new and existing home sales and two readings on consumer sentiment are likely to move the markets, and perhaps voters’ preferences.

Monday, Oct. 25, brings release by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) of its monthly report on existing home sales for September.

Tuesday, Oct. 26, bring the S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index (HPI) for August, while the Conference Board releases its consumer confidence index for October. TD Ameritrade is scheduled to release its third quarter earnings. Schwab Advisor Services’s annual Impact conference is called to order in Boston, where SAS chief Bernie Clark is expected to announce the first partners for Schwab’s nascent “intelligent integration” technology approach. Look for onsite reporting from AdvisorOne’s Kate McBride and Jamie Green.

Wednesday, Oct. 27, brings durable goods orders and new home sales reports for September, while companies announcing earnings include Allstate and Ameriprise.

On Thursday, Oct. 28, European Union leaders are scheduled to meet to ratify eurozone budget rules, and the Bank of Japan holds an interest rate meeting, while back home comes release of new weekly unemployment claims. MetLife reports earnings after the market close.

The business week ends on Friday, Oct. 29, with release of the first estimate on Q3 GDP; Reuters/U. of Michigan consumer sentiment report. The insurance and consulting company Aon announces earnings, while Schwab’s Impact show concludes with an appearance by former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.
